TEACHING RESOURCES AND STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ABEOKUTA SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OGUN STATE – CHAPTER FOUR

                       DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSES

            This chapter present the findings of the study. Data collected are presented and analysed using percentage. Each research question raise a separate table as follows:

Research Question 1                                                                                                 What are the teaching resources available for teaching social studies in junior secondary school in Abeokuta south local government area of Ogun state?

            From the table above, it can be seen that 95 respondents strongly agreed, 3 of them merely agreed which gives 98 respondents responded positively, while one in each merely disagreed and strongly disagreed respectively that blackboards are available. A total of 70 respondents and 27 respondents strongly agreed and merely agreed respectively that charts/maps are available, while only a total of 3 respondents disagreed. A total of 90 respondents stated that books are available as teaching resources, only 10 of the objected. Finally a total of 65 respondents strongly agree and 25 of them merely agreed that diagrams are available for the teaching of social studies only a total of 10 respondents disagreed.

Research Question Two

What is the effect of teaching resources on the academic performance of junior secondary school student in social studies?

Effective ways of the instructional materials to be incorporating in the social studies lesson

            The above tabular statement reveals that 60 respondents and another 20 respondents strongly and merely agreed respectively that the participation of students in the lesson is an effective way of believing that the instructional material is highly incorporating into the lesson. A total of 98 respondents agreed that easy presentation of instructional material by teachers draws the attention of student in the lesson while 2 respondents rejected this. A total of 2 respondents and one strongly agreed and merely agreed respectively that teaching help the students to understand what they are being thought, while 97 rejected that to a large extent the success of students is as a result of the type of teaching resources used.

Research Question Three

How does an inadequate teaching resource affect the academic performance of junior secondary school students in social studies?

            From the above table 80 respondents strongly agreed and another 15 merely agreed that inadequate teaching resource make the lesson gloomy, while a total of 5 respondents did not accept this view. Only a total of 10 respondents were of the opinion that teaching resource help the student to learn social studies will but a total of 90 respondents did not accept this idea. 60 respondents strongly agreed that teaching resource help the student to learn social studies while the total of 40 respondents strongly agreed and 30 merely agreed that most teachers, teaching social studies don’t like using teaching resources and students learn very slowly.

Researcher Question Four

What ways can teaching resources enhance student academic performance on social studies in junior secondary school in Abeokuta South of Ogun State?

            The table above shows that 20 respondents strongly agreed and 30 merely agreed that teaching resources help students to improve well on the topics they are not doing well, while the total of 50 respondent equally disagree with that from the total is seen that 50% accepted and 50% equally rejected that a total of 95 respondents are on the view that teaching resources help social studies student to do well in field work, while 5 are on the opinion that teaching don’t help. A total of 25 respondents were of the opinion that teaching resources help students to perform well in both internal and external examination while 75 respondent reject that the total of 10 are of the opinion that teaching resources has direct relationship with student learning.

Summary of the Findings

From the result of the analysis of the data, here are finds.

1.      The secondary school teachers/students perception of the teaching resource available for teaching of social studies are; blackboards, charts, maps, textbooks and diagram all the above mentioned enhance teaching and learning of social studies.

2.      The secondary school teachers/students perception of the effect of teaching resources in teaching and learning of social studies are; effective participation of student make the lesson understandable, easy presentation by the teacher draws the attention of the students, teaching resource help the students to understand what they are thought, the success of students is to a large extent on the teaching resource use in the class.

3.      The secondary school teachers/students perception on the inadequate of teaching resources in teaching of social studies in junior secondary schools are; inadequate teaching resources makes the lesson gloomy, absent of teaching resources make student to sleep while lesson is going on, teaching resources help the student to learn social studies well.

The secondary school teachers/students perception  on the ways teaching resource enhance students’ academic performance in learning social studies are; teaching resource help students to do well in field work, teaching resources help students to improve and do well in both internal and external examination, teaching resources has direct relationship with students
