The University of Edinburgh is part of a consortium of eight Higher Education institutions which has been awarded funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to support postgraduate studentships and training in the Arts and Humanities in Scotland.
Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University

- Study Subject: The School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC) is delighted to consider applications for AHRC doctoral studentship awards in the following areas:
- Creative Writing
- Comparative Literature
- English Literature
- Film History, Theory and Criticism
- Translation Studies
- Languages: French Studies, German Studies, Hispanic, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, Italian Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Russian Studies, Scandinavian Studies
- Asiatic and Oriental Studies
- Celtic & Scottish Studies
Scholarship Award: If you have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the three year period preceding the start date of your proposed postgraduate programme, you may be eligible to apply for a full award, which pays your tuition fees and a maintenance grant. If you are from a European Union (EU) country, other than the UK, and you have been resident in an EU country for a period of three years preceding the start of your proposed study, you may be eligible for a fees-only award, which pays your tuition fees, but does not provide a maintenance grant.

- Eligible Countries: The Scholarship is available to UK/ EU students.
- Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. Candidates will normally hold a relevant First Class undergraduate honours degree (such as a BA Hons) and preferably a similar calibre of postgraduate Master’s degree.
2. If you have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the three year period preceding the start date of your proposed postgraduate programme, you may be eligible to apply for a full award, which pays your tuition fees and a maintenance grant. If you are from a European Union (EU) country, other than the UK, and you have been resident in an EU country for a period of three years preceding the start of your proposed study, you may be eligible for a fees-only award, which pays your tuition fees, but does not provide a maintenance grant.
3. If you are resident neither in the UK nor in another EU country, you are not eligible to apply for an AHRC studentship.

How to Apply:
- If you are eligible, you are encouraged to make contact with the School as soon as possible to register your interest in this funding opportunity. This will enable us to track the progress of your application. Please email the LLC Postgraduate Office to register interest. You can also contact potential supervisors early in the process to assist in the application process if you wish.
- You must complete the University of Edinburgh online application for the PhD programme you wish to study by Monday 30th November 2018. Once your application has been submitted, you will receive an email confirmation from the system. This will include a User Name (UUN).
- You must then complete the AHRC studentship application form and return it, by email, to the LLC Postgraduate Office by Monday 3rd of December 2018. The application form will be available to download from the Scottish Graduate School for the Arts & Humanities website from late October 2018. Please follow the instructions and use the guidelines provided.
PLEASE NOTE: BOTH STEPS 2 AND 3 MUST BE COMPLETED FOR YOUR APPLICATION TO BE COMPLETE, SO PLEASE MAKE SURE TO ALLOW YOURSELF TIME BEFORE THE DEADLINES PROVIDED ABOVE.
