Introduction

Background of Study

Management is an integral part of an organization. The survival of any organization is dependent largely on the quality of management or administrative services involved.

Obi (2000) defined management as the process of ensuring judicious allocation of available organizational inputs (human and material resources) through planning, organizing, directing, controlling and procuring for the purposes of maximizing results.

Management is used in firms, industries, private and public organizations like hospitals, banks, government offices and institutions of learning.

Management can also be seen as a means of working with people for achievement of goals.

Anaekwe (2002) in his own view, noted that management is the process of planning, organizing, leading and controlling of the efforts of organizational members and the use of other organizational resources to achieve stated organizational goals.

Obi (2003) stressed that management is a process of planning and organizing operations in order to achieve a coordination of human and material resources essential for the effective and efficient attainment of set objectives.

Management therefore is the guiding of the efforts of people towards some common objectives. Hence, management is very essential ingredient in the life of every organization for purpose of efficiency and productivity.

From the these definitions, it can also be deduce that management is a social process which has goals to achieve.
